Megan Rowbottom (she/her) is a Canadian illustrator currently residing in Vancouver. She is an artist based in traditional mixed-media illustrations, including watercolours, pencil crayons, ink, and pastels. Megan depicts nature and animals in an anthropomorphic way, imitating fantasy and real life, with the intention to tell stories through the visuals she creates. Historical events or folklore are a huge source of Megan’s inspiration. Depicting pre-existing tales requires her to do a lot of research but she enjoys the process and the outcome.
Lake Cowichan, BC, is where Megan grew up, nestled by the mountains and waters surrounding Vancouver Island. The small-town whimsy of her childhood accompanied by her family’s encouragement allowed her to freely explore writing, drawing and her imagination. She was frequently writing her own stories growing up, and illustration was just another cog in the crafting realm she always loved.
When Megan was deciding what to do after she graduated high school, she felt that art was the only thing in her life she was sure about. Megan is currently studying illustration at Emily Carr University of Art & Design, intending to pursue children’s book illustration post-graduation. She enjoys the iterative process of critique, has a knack for organization, scheduling, and is best at working alone under a strict schedule (even if it’s one she creates for herself).
